Road Safety Campaign - Slow Down web version.jpg

Speeding is the leading cause of road crashes in our region and one of the most complex road safety issues we face. While traditional campaigns focus on the risks of harm and being caught, speeding remains common and relatively socially accepted. The Community Action for Safe Speeds (CASS) project aims to change that by testing a new approach: what if the community designed its own road safety campaign?

Mid-Western Regional is one of seven NSW councils chosen to take part in this research, led by The George Institute for Global Health and UNSW. A local Community Jury was formed to explore the issue with experts and formulate practical solutions.

Thanks to National Road Safety Action Grants Program funding, one of the jury’s top ideas is now being brought to life right here in our region.

About the campaign

The Please Slow Down Because…garden sign campaign is a winning idea because it was designed with Mid-Western’s road network, towns and villages in mind. It provides an opportunity for local residents and business owners to target messages to drivers whilst they are on the road and tell them WHY they need to drive at a safe speed at that location. It humanises the issue at a local level.

Displaying a personalised “Please Show Down Because…” garden sign aims to:

  • Reduce the incidence of speeding in our local community
  • Promote the concept of safe speeds
  • Provide an opportunity for the community to pledge their support for safe speeds and create safer road environments for everyone
  • Improve community perception of safety in public spaces.
  • Tell drivers WHY they should slow down in a local voice.

Conditions for participation

To be eligible for the campaign:

  • Participants must reside in the Mid-Western Region LGA.
  • Participants must provide a street address in the Mid-Western LGA and agree to have the sign on display during the campaign period. Each property will be assessed for the appropriateness of the location.
  • Participants must agree to allow installation and removal the signs by authorised Council employees.
  • Participants will advise Council immediately of any damage to the signs.
  • Participants within Heritage Conservation Zones or with heritage buildings must declare this for consideration.
  • Participants must be over 18 years of age.

Signage options

The design style for the campaign has been developed by Mid-Western Regional Council. This template will be used for all signs, with the option to customise the statement and optional name sign off windows.

These are some key considerations for the development of a successful statement:

Words, messages and themes that are:

  • Relevant to the topic of speeding and creating a safer road environment for all
  • Thought-provoking
  • Generate a positive feeling towards driving at safe speeds
  • Written in simple, clear language
  • Written within the word limit. Long sentences will be distracting to passing traffic.
  • Samples are available in the drop down menu, with an option to create your own statement or customise the sample (subject to approval).

The size of the sign will be determined by your location. Properties in built up areas will use a 900x600mm sign, and properties in rural areas may have a 900 x 1200mm sign.

Restrictions

  • Statements must not contain potentially offensive material.
  • Statements must not contain religious, political or celebrity content.
  • Statements must not contain trademarks, brands, business names, logos or copyright images.

Installation

  • Once the signage application is approved and in production, it will be installed and removed according to the State Environmental Planning Policy, Advertising and Signage Development Code 2008  and Transport Corridor Outdoor Advertising and Signage Guidelines by authorised Council team members.
  • Signage placement will not obstruct or interfere with any traffic signs, pedestrian access, clear view lines for both pedestrians and motorists, and be located wholly within the boundaries of the property.

Thank you to all who displayed a garden sign in your front yard as part of the road safety campaign to change attitudes towards speeding.
