Council is thanking residents across the region for their enthusiastic involvement in the ‘Please Slow Down’ road safety campaign, which will wrap up this week.

The grassroots initiative, developed locally through a world-first Community Jury process, has seen more than 60 garden signs displayed outside properties across Mudgee, Gulgong, Kandos, Rylstone and surrounding villages. Each sign carried a personalised message from residents, reminding drivers why safe speeds matter on local roads.

The campaign forms part of the broader Community Action for Safe Speeds (CASS) project delivered in partnership with The George Institute for Global Health, and funded by the National Road Safety Action Grants Program.

Council’s General Manager, Brad Cam, said the strong community response demonstrates just how important road safety is across the region.

“We’ve seen people really embrace this campaign,” Mr Cam said.

“Speeding remains the leading cause of injury crashes in our region, and this project has helped start new conversations about how we drive. The messages on these signs have been warm, clever and meaningful.”

Some standout messages included: • my children play here • stories deserve happy endings (displayed at Mudgee Library) • it makes us all safer, even you • we all deserve to get home safely • the roos are rife here • this is Gladstone Street, not Mount Panorama • children cross the road here • our driveway is a cricket pitch

“This was a campaign created by our community for our community,” Mr Cam said.

“It’s a simple idea, but it’s proven to be a powerful one and it has already attracted interest from road safety organisations across the world.”

If results continue to be positive, the Mid-Western Region’s homegrown idea may be adopted as a state-wide road safety initiative.
