Local Australia Day Award nominations open on Tuesday and residents are encouraged to nominate someone they know who may be deserving of an award.

Mayor of the Mid-Western Region, Des Kennedy called on residents to take a few minutes to nominate a friend, family member or colleague who volunteers, is involved in sport or the arts, or has significantly contributed to their community.

“There are so many wonderful people in our region doing great things, and giving their time and services to improve our community,” Cr Kennedy said.

“If you’ve noticed the service of someone this year, why not consider taking just a few moments to nominate them and shine a light on their achievements.”

There are six categories in which to nominate including Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year.

The 2022 Citizen of the Year, Simon Bennett was recognised for 30 years of volunteer work across numerous local organisations including St Vincent de Paul, Lions, Rotary, Mudgee Disability Support Service, Mudgee Golf Club, Small Farm Field Days, Sculptures in the Garden and St Mary’s Parish Mudgee.

“Simon is a prime example of someone deserving of the Citizen of the Year award,” Cr Kennedy said.

“He has volunteered, most likely hundreds of hours with numerous local charities for more than 30 years and was deserving of recognition.”

Nominees must be Australian citizens and must reside within the Mid-Western Regional Council area. Nominations available on Council’s website and close on 24 November 2022.

Mid-Western Regional Council’s Australia Day Celebrations will take place at Rylstone Showground on Australia Day, Thursday, 26 January 2023.
