Waste Management

Mid-Western Regional Council operates kerbside domestic waste, recycling and Food Organics / Garden Organics collection services within the towns of Mudgee, Gulgong, Kandos and Rylstone, and the villages of Charbon and Clandulla. Domestic waste collected is transported to waste facilities at Mudgee for landfilling. Recyclable waste collected is transported to the Mudgee Waste Facility for sorting and processing. Food Organics / Garden Organics are collected by Councils contractor and delivered to the Dubbo Regional Organics Processing plant (DROP) for sorting and composting. The rural area and remaining villages are serviced with access to Waste Transfer Stations.

The existing landfill cell at the Mudgee Waste Depot will reach capacity within 4 years. Council has engaged a specialist consultant to prepare a Landfill design, incorporating a staged landfilling plan and staged landfill closure plan for operation of the facility.

Council operates three urban (Mudgee, Gulgong and Kandos), and twelve village and rural waste transfer stations for domestic residents outside of the kerbside collection area. Accumulated domestic waste and recycling materials are transported to the Mudgee Waste Facility for landfilling or sorting and processing.

Council oversees Mudgee Recycling as part of its overall waste management operations. Council places a lot of emphasis on recycling and ensuring that the amount of material entering landfill is kept to a minimum. An important aspect of the recycling operation is the continued meaningful employment of members of the region’s disabled community.

The Council’s aim and focus is to:

  • Minimise the amount of waste that goes to landfill.
  • Encourage the maximisation of community involvement into recycling by providing accessible recycling services and facilities.
  • Maintain the transfer stations around the Region for the community to maximise opportunity for recycling.

Kerbside FOGO Compost

Mid-Western Regional Council is one of three councils in Central West NSW who introduced organics recycling in 2018 as part of a regional collaboration to turn food scraps and garden waste into compost, instead of landfill.

A weekly kerbside bin service now collects food and garden organic waste from some 24,000 homes across Dubbo Regional, Mid-Western Regional and Narromine Shire Councils. The organic waste is transported to the Dubbo Regional Organics Processing Plant, located at the Whylandra Waste and Recycling Centre near Dubbo. Here the material is composted to Australian Standards by Council’s organic waste contractor JR Richards & Sons.

As part of the kerbside Food & Garden Waste service, residents are provided with a kitchen ‘caddy’ and ongoing supply of compostable liners for collection of kitchen food scraps.

The compost is being used on council sporting fields and parks in the region and is also available for farms and home gardens.

This project was supported by the Environmental Trust as part of the NSW EPA’s Waste Less, Recycle More initiative, funded from the waste levy.
