Roundabout at the Intersection of Douro & Market Streets
Getting set for a long-awaited highway improvement, Mid-Western Regional Council has started the consultation program leading to the installation of a roundabout at the intersection of Douro and Market Streets in Mudgee.
The project will get underway with the relocation of underground utilities and a powerpole before Christmas. Construction work is planned to commence in mid January, with detours in place to route traffic around the intersection as needed. Plans call for the work to be completed by early April.
“This intersection has been a major local bottleneck because you have Castlereagh Highway turning a corner from Douro to Market, with priority given to east-west traffic on Market, and vehicles travelling south on Douro – including trucks from the Ulan Road – having to wait to either cross Market or turn west on Market,” Roads Manager Scott Parsons said.
“This roundabout has been designed with heavy truck traffic in mind. When its installed, it will go a long way toward making traffic flow more freely. We’ve been waiting a long time for this, and we want to have it all finished before ANZAC Day 2010.”
The planned detours call for closing Market Street to all but local traffic between Court and Perry Streets, with Douro Street closed between Mortimer and Short Streets.
Mr Parsons said letters detailing the planned detours and work will be sent to businesses and homes on the detour routes as well as the sections of Market and Douro Streets where traffic is to be restricted. Letters also will be sent to stakeholder groups including bus companies, cyclists, aged care and childcare facilities and the Mudgee Visitor Information Centre.
“We want everyone to be aware of what is going on, including the fact that there will be works in the vicinity of the intersection between now and Christmas to move utilities and prepare for the construction,” he said. “Motorists are asked to stay alert for worksite or detour signs and to exercise caution because of the changed conditions.”
When it is completed the roundabout will have a mountable concrete centre island standing 60mm above the road surface, with a raised centre cone.
There will be pedestrian “blisters” on each corner like those at Market and Perry Streets and splitter islands with pedestrian refuges in the middle of each street. Tactile markings will be installed on the blisters and pedestrian refuges to assist the vision impaired in crossing at the intersection.
The upgrade of this intersection is part of a partnership between Council and the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority. Written comments on the proposed works may be delivered to any Council Customer Service Centre, mailed to PO Box 156, Mudgee NSW 2850 or emailed to council@midwestern.nsw.gov.au
