B Double Study Assessment

Mid-Western Regional Council is placing on public exhibition the B-Double Study Assessment of Routes Revision A 2009. The study resulted from a request by NSW Farmers, Mudgee and Wine and Grape Growers and representatives from the transport industry for additional B-Double transportation corridors within our region primarily for livestock transportation.

The B-Double study investigated all roads within our region with regard to their suitability for use by B-Doubles and/or 4.6m high vehicles (the standard height of modern stock crates). Of these hundreds of roads, 98 were short listed for further detailed investigation. It is not recommended that a general B-Double zone be approved for our Local Government Area (LGA) as the majority of roads within our region are not suitable for B-Double passage. The report concludes 49 of the roads investigated to be suitable for B-Double transportation, many with conditions on use. Furthermore, it is proposed that all roads are suitable for 4.6m high vehicles, subject to the conditions.

Despite the many positive safety, social, environmental and economical benefits of B-Double transportation (generally relating to the overall reduction of freight trucks on our roads), many ordinary motorists are against higher truck sizes and weights, most likely feeling intimidated on the road by these larger vehicles. Council encourages all road users to review the study which is available at Council’s customer service centres in Gulgong, Mudgee and Rylstone and at Council’s libraries in Kandos and Mudgee or can be downloaded by clicking on the link below:
