Local History & Genealogy
A valuable resource held by Mid-Western Regional Council is their local history collection. The collection includes historic and contemporary aspects of our region and contains parish maps, books on the origin of our towns and several of our heritage buildings, books about the area and books by local authors. Local newspapers are available on microfilm.

Colonial Inn Museum & Mudgee Historical Society Inc - The Mudgee Historical Society Inc collects and displays items and documents pertaining to the history and culture of the Mudgee district, promotes its history, and provides a family history research service from its extensive archives.
Mudgee District Local History - Mudgee District Local History is a service that tells the story of the second region settled west of the Blue Mountains, a district with a fine tradition of heritage that is preserved and valued.
Gulgong Pioneers Museum - Established in 1962, the Gulgong Pioneers Museum is home to one of the finest collections of Australiana in the country.
Rylstone District Historical Society - The RDHS wiki has pages for more than 1,500 individuals and families, 700 localities and 400 rural properties. It also has many other pages relating to a wide variety of subjects connected to the area. The information on each page is also being updated and added to on a regular basis as members add what information they have.
Kandos Bicentennial Museum - The Museum was opened on 30th November 1988, after a great deal of preliminary work had been carried out by a small group of dedicated small group of people who were interested in keeping and displaying items from the history of the area and Kandos in particular.
Kandos History - Created to promote the town of Kandos and share some of its unique history.

Many people are interested in tracing their family history. The best place to begin is with any facts about your family that you know and work backwards. Ask relatives about dates and people. Listening to stories about the family can produce interesting facts.
Mid-Western Regional Council Library holds over 500 items that provide information on births, deaths and marriages, Pioneer Registers, Shipping, Census, guides for tracing ancestors, convicts.

The Library's collections offer a wealth of resources to the Australian family historian.
The Memorial's collections contain a wealth of material relating to the military service of individuals that will help if you are trying to track down information about relatives who served in any of the conflicts in which Australia has been involved since the 1860s.
These family history research guides encompass the lives and ancestory of individuals and families originating in, or connected to, New South Wales.
State Records NSW provides access to the official archives of New South Wales. Information is available on catalogues, guides, indexes and other tools for searching the archives.
The Registry provides data on births, deaths and marriages in New South Wales. A range of certificates are available from this site.
You can search our two online indexes, the Historical index and the Marine index. Your search results will give a summary of details held in our birth, marriage or death registers.
You can search our historical indexes free of charge. Index records are available for births registered up to and including 1914, deaths registered up to and including 1983 and marriages registered up to and including 1938.
The registry offers free online historic index searching of births, deaths and marriages from 1841.

Australian Cemeteries Index - The purpose of this index is to provide a searchable data base for all cemetery inscriptions that have been recorded by the authors and contributors over several years. It is intended to be a useful tool for those researching their family history.
The Ryerson Index - The Ryerson Index is an index to death notices appearing in current Australian newspapers. It also includes some funeral notices, probate notices and obituaries.
